Bullet Solutions: Celebrating 20 Years of Timetabling Intelligence for Higher Education
Celebrating two decades of intelligent computation and combinatorial optimization.
Pedro Fernandes, CEO·January 4, 2026

When we founded Bullet Solutions in 2006, our ambition was to tackle some of the most complex combinatorial problems faced by organizations. As we celebrate 20 years of Bullet Solutions, it's worth remembering that long before Artificial Intelligence became the buzzword it is today, our work was already grounded in intelligent computation and rigorous Operational Research.
From Operational Research to real deployments
A clear example of this is the research we shared with the academic community through several conferences and, notably, in the prestigious Journal of Scheduling in 2016. Those publications documented years of effort in building realistic models of timetabling problems, designing robust algorithms, and delivering solutions that could be applied under real institutional constraints. At a time when many academic studies remained theoretical, Bullet Solutions was bridging the gap between research and practice, producing software that was successfully deployed across Portuguese higher education institutions.
This early work exemplified our philosophy: intelligence must be practical, scalable, and adaptable. The Bullet Time Tabler Education (BTTE) system was not just an optimization engine; it was a decision support tool that respected hard constraints, balanced soft constraints, and delivered feasible, high-quality solutions in environments where manual scheduling was costly and inefficient. In hindsight, BTTE was an early manifestation of AI principles applied to combinatorial optimization.
Our core remains the same: designing intelligent algorithms that resolve combinatorial problems with efficiency and elegance. What has changed is the scale and sophistication of the tools at our disposal. Machine learning, advanced heuristics, and hybrid AI models now complement the foundations of Operational Research, enabling us to deliver solutions that are faster, more adaptive, and more robust than ever before.
Practical AI, same principle
Today, as part of Volaris, itself part of Constellation Software Inc., we benefit from an immense network of knowledge sharing and collaboration. This ecosystem has allowed us to remain at the forefront of AI adoption, integrating insights from diverse industries and applying them to our own domain. The result is a continuous evolution of our solutions — always guided by the principle that intelligence must serve practical business needs.
With more than 25 years of experience in this field, I have witnessed the transformation of AI from a niche research topic into a pervasive force shaping industries worldwide. That perspective gives me confidence, but not complacency.
The journey of Bullet Solutions, now 20 years strong, has always been about curiosity, rigor, and a commitment to solving real-world problems, not about claiming to have all the answers.
Looking ahead, our mission is unchanged: to continue pushing the boundaries of intelligent computation, ensuring that AI is not just a buzzword but a practical tool that empowers organizations to thrive in complexity. The past has shown us what is possible; the future challenges us to go further.
